Covid-19 means practising at home - here are some tips

Practising yoga at home is a new experience for some people. This can be an opportunity to develop the habit of doing home practice, even when normal classes resume. Home practice goes hand in hand with attending a yoga studio.

Yoga is a lifestyle and when you bring it into your home something special happens.

Here are some suggestions for making the most of your online/at home yoga:

  • For good sound quality use a speaker - Bluetooth is handy.

  • Prepare a suitable place for your practice. A clean, airy, warm, uncluttered, peaceful room is ideal.

  • Ensure you have what you need - yoga mat, blanket, cushion, bolster, kneeling stool.

  • Ensure you won't be disturbed. Leave the phone somewhere else. No pets to help you. The door need not be answered.

  • Practice on an empty stomach, at least 2 hours after eating. Avoid stimulants such as tea, coffee or alcohol prior to practice.

You may come up with your own rituals, such as a vase of flowers, a candle and some incense.

Do what helps you to experience the yoga and let go of other concerns.

Meditation is fundamental to yoga. It is a means of accessing your inner dimension, a part of you that is often lost in the turbulence of daily life. When the inner world is ignored, it becomes dysfunctional. In the relaxed, focussed state of meditation, your relationship with your mind changes. Gradually you become mentally clearer, calmer and more balanced. It is important to learn meditation properly from an experienced teacher in a systematic way. The sessions will include theory, some preparatory yogic stretching and breathing and a meditation.

Introduction to Meditation is a 5-week course covering the basics of stillness and focus for a simple practice.

Developing Meditation with Ahimsa is a 10-week course focusing on a different method each term. These traditional meditations draw on the rich, esoteric culture of yoga. Courses will include mantra, mudra, pranic channels, chakras, trataka and more.

Mindfulness on Mondays with Melissa is an 8-week course covering the impact of stress on the body and mind; the importance of relaxation; healthy emotions; living in the present moment.
